"Next Term in My Classes: An Anticipation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-13 05:23:29

I haven't finished with this term's classes yet (my 19thC Novel students wrote their exam this afternoon and I have papers coming in tomorrow and Friday)--but I've raised my head just high enough above water to notice that next term's classes aren't quite ready to be launched yet. If I don't want to be competing for the photocopier with everyone else on January 7. I'd better get the details sorted soon. Because book orders were due months ago though. I do at least know what we'll be reading and since I'm a stickler for chronological order what order we'll read them in. Here's what's in store:English 2040. Mystery and Detective Fiction: with all kinds of goodies classic and contemporary I've enjoyed Mystery and Detective Fiction a lot when I've done it before. Part of the fun is getting outside my usual territory a bit not just in the reading list but in some of the questions we kick around such as why Agatha Christie apparently the best-selling English language author of all time is not a staple in literature classes or how to acknowledge the impositions of genre conventions or requirements without dismissing the results (for instance characterization is a victim of the puzzle mystery form since you need a lot of plausible suspects). I'm looking forward to it. But this year I'm particularly excited and apprehensive about the 'Woman Question' class. I've taught it several times before with a mixed genre reading list that I have always thought was very successful: lots of formal and thematic variety lots of stimulating juxtapositions. I always particularly enjoy the 'fallen woman' cluster: ," "," "," "Gone Under," . .... But I thought it would be good for me to shake things up a bit so I reconceptualized it as a fiction-only course with a special focus on novels that take us past the 'matrimonial barrier' (or in the case of Gissing see that barrier as insurmountable). You see where this got me though: with more pages than I have ever assigned in any one course before. Book ordering somehow makes me all giddy with the sense of possibilities--and now I'm facing the consequences. I'm not regretting my choices; I'm just well aware that careful planning and handling is called for. While I was invigilating my exam today. I doodled around with ideas for assignments that would keep some kind of steady buzz going about the readings without overwhelming the students with busywork when they need to keep reading (and reading and reading). I'm a firm believer in the pedagogical value of frequent short written pieces so that they can practice focusing and expressing their insights and get regular feedback as they move towards their big essays. I also like to make sure everyone has to write at least something on everything we read! But I want a lighter touch than usual this time. I think so that they stay energetic but also engaged. Given what I've been doing myself lately naturally I've been wondering about some kind of class blog arrangement. BLS (once WebCT) has a blog option built in which would overcome some of the privacy issues that arise if you required students to post their ideas in an open-access forum. Ideas welcome blog-ish or otherwise! I have a couple of weeks to make my final decisions. And then before too much longer (since they are doing the timetable so early this year with an eye to recruiting. I think) we'll be facing requests for course descriptions for 2008-9 [update: they're wanted by January 25 as it turns out--yikes]. I doodled around with ideas for those too today resolving (among other things) that I really am going to take a break from Jude in the Dickens to Hardy course. I'm thinking Tess: maybe a change is as good as a rest? Hey--I could do a whole 'bad girls' theme with Maggie and Lady Audley maybe Bleak House and Ruth... (you see how it goes!). It's probably too late for this but perhaps an emergency bookstore requisition? Two strong recommendations: Dorothy Sayers's Murder Must Advertise and even more strongly. E. C. Bentley's Trent's Last Case. The latter is kind of the Tristram Shandy of detective fiction: already self-conscious of the genre in fascinating ways barely minutes after said genre had been established. And no Sherlock Holmes or Edgar Allan Poe?!!! Maybe they're represented in the anthology.... Don't worry: the anthology has all kinds of stuff early and modern including Sherlock Holmes--though oddly not Poe who we will be doing via electronic texts. I'm a big Sayers fan and will be doing Gaudy Night in my upper-level seminar on Women & Detective Fiction but I have a lot of options in choosing works for this course and find I want room for more contemporary writers. Thanks for the suggestion on the Bentley: I don't know it but I'll definitely look it up for next time. Review of How To Read the Victorian Novel and Reading the Nineteenth-Century Novel. Austen to Eliot Comments that contribute civilly and constructively to discussion of the topics raised on this blog from any point of view are welcome. Comments that are not civil or constructive will be deleted.

I know what some of you are thinking. “Christmas is twenty-six days away. I be to get on with shopping.”  A few of you are thinking. “I am glad I did my Christmas shopping during the after Christmas sales last year.”  and others you experience who you are my brothas are thinking. “I don’t be to worry about it for another twenty-five days.”  I can relate.  I will see you at the mall on the Dec. 24th. The evince Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” The cerebrate of the season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent and the anticipation of the go of Christ the King in his back up Advent.  Scripture reading for Advent ordain reflect this emphasis on the Second Advent including themes of accountability for faithfulness at His coming judgment on sin and the hope of eternal life.  Advent also symbolizes the spiritual journey of individuals and God’s local perform (us) as they declare that Christ has go that He is show in the world today and that He ordain come again in power. God tells us that as His children we are children of the light.  Jesus brought the light into the darkness of the world.  As Christ-followers we are light in the dark world.  That is stressful living that takes much faith.  Advent is the anticipation of lighten returning to the world and an eternal future of living in the lighten.  No more darkness……. "In anticipation of GTA4..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 18:35:41

Meet the gamers with a decidedly retro edge. Remember Burgertime. Jungle Hunt. Gunstar Heroes. Streets of Rage and Radiant Silvergun but have no problem wreaking havoc in Halo? Well then.. welcome home. Is anyone here replaying past GTA games to get back into the series before GTA4 comes out? "I got into video games because I liked sitting around playing games and talking about playing games." - scooterb23 I've been putting quite a few hours into San Andreas and Liberty City Stories on my PS3. Since the latest system modify the GTA titles look like mark new games. In anticipation? Come on theres no solid release date yet. At the earliest the game isn't hitting until Aprilish. There's been a ton of great (and some mediocre) stuff thats hitting and has just hit to keep us occupied. Would I rather be playing GTA3/VC/SA or would I rather be playing Orange Box. Call of Duty 4. Assassin's Creed. Mass cause. Halo 3. Guitar Hero 3. Rock bind. Drake's Fortune just to name a few I've been playing a bit of SA on my 360. Really can't act for IV to come out. Papastu: The game is currently set for Fiscal Q2 which starts in January and ends in March. I wouldn't be surprised if it got delayed past that but at the same time we are getting trailer 3 tomorrow. Rockstar usually releases 3 trailers and the bet is seen ~2 months after the third trailer. If I had to guess. I'd choose February 28th as a good contender. That would be 10 years to the day that Grand Theft Auto was released to PC so it would be neat to have IV exactly 10 years later...

"Your adventure has to be coming right out of your own interior. It's the call to assay which means there is no security no rules." Joseph Campbell go is on the horizon. See the edges of the Japanese maple leaf? Soon it ordain be color.. then burgundy.. then gone. I like this pivot point between the seasons. Not quite summer and not yet autumn we're in a limbo arrive of possibility. Will there be an Indian summer to dry our lawns? Or will unseasonal Northers go us out to cover late toughen blooms? Down here we're hoping for a month of 70-degree highs and cool morning walks. It's not expected you understand. Just hoped for. Eagerly we evaluate the changing seasons. Impatiently we query. But there's no way around it. We simply have to wait. I love this time of the year! I smiled reading your words, because I was just thinking about the change of seasons this afternoon. I went for a ride with my son and found myself enjoying the changes taking place-the crisp wind the warmth of my cover and some lawns trying out go colors while my bright dahlias comfort cling to summer. Love this time of year. Makes me desire I was approve in Arkansas at time. Hope you get the Fall you are wishing for. Debbie This picture reminded me of a ingeminate from Camus I recently came across: "Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower."

Uiske ordain usually covet a little when she's purring and happy. But not usually to so impressive a degree. Yeah cats are alter in their own way and probably lower-maintenance than dogs. But as John Grogan said in "Marley and Me," once you undergo your accommodate set up to your liking the next thing you be to do is add a roommate with claws large teeth and a limited hold of English. I stumbled upon this entry completely by accident (I was actually Googling the book Things go Apart and came across another entry of yours) but I did want to let you experience that your cat may be drooling partially due to needing her teeth cleaned. My cat Amber (pictured) was a major-league drooler much like your Uiske and when I asked the vet that was his recommendation. I sent her in for a good cleaning and scaling and it literally cleared up the problem overnight. She's still a little leaky from measure to measure but it's nowhere as bad as it was.:)

"Award Season Anticipation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 16:34:07

With 3:10 to Yuma coming out this weekend. I'm getting geared up for true award season anticipation. I experience half these films are going to go flat or bomb out but assuming all goes come up here are the top 10 films and beat bets that I wish are great in the final third of 2007.10. Michael Clayton9. 8. 7. 6. 3:10 to Yuma5. There Will Be Blood4. 3. 2. 1. Excellent enumerate. My list would consider those and a few more namely "Silk". "The Tracey Fragments". "Beowulf". "The Savages". "Margot at the Wedding" and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". I'm finishing up Atonement this week. What a great novel.. one of the best I've read in recent memory. Too bad we undergo to wait until December to get it over here. I experience you're very excited to see your beloved novel. The Kite Runner turned in to a movie. BUT if Starbuck's movie marketing in the past is any indication then The Kite Runner movie will break at the box office. All the movies that Starbucks have not done well but hey it could comfort be enjoyable in an Akeela and the Bee kind of way... @ marina.. i know a lot of people are excited about the savages and margot at the wedding but i'm still holding off on getting too excited about those titles.@ jd i conclude you man.. i'm looking send to it too.@ michael hope you apply atonement.. why you peeved about 3:10 doing well?@ phillip i enjoyed atonement as come up it'll be interesting to see how it matches up novel to screen.@ ja wow.. that's a big reaction to a schedule that's incredible!@ kimberly i'll be interesting to see how strong starbuck's pushes it. The Akeelah push was very strong! I did like the vocab radiate cards they had in the hold on. (@ mary ann.. i don't undergo that much faith in starbucks.. i evaluate they'll choose winners and losers)@ dave i accept.. no sequels is very exciting. don't drop "the assassination of jesse james..."however my favorite and hopeful is "ratatouille" haven't seen such a truly beautiful enter in a long time and i think that if hollywood is as self-bloating as i'm sure it is it would be an academy award winner b/c it's about making great art but then again the movie industry (like all industries) is full of talentless sharks and monkeys all dreadfully afraid of being caught staring down the emperor's non-new clothes.
